The shared Code of conduct (the code) can help you understand what standards of conduct you can expect from registered health practitioners. The code applies to registered health practitioners in 12 professions.

What the code says

The code says you can expect registered health practitioners to:

  1. treat you with respect whatever your culture, beliefs and choices
  2. provide culturally safe care if you are an Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander person
  3. maintain your privacy and confidentiality and keep records about your care
  4. listen to you and give you information about your health in a way you understand
  5. help you to get the care that you need
  6. explain if things go wrong and work with you to fix them
  7. work respectfully with others to help get the best outcome for you
  8. work to keep you and the community healthy
  9. put your safety first and reduce risks by working in their area of expertise and staying up to date with knowledge and skills
  10. are honest and trustworthy and behave professionally
  11. support students and practitioners being mentored to provide you with safe and effective healthcare, and
  12. recognise the importance of evidence-based and ethical research in your healthcare.
