To ensure that they are able to practise competently and safely, registered health practitioners must have recent practice in the scope in which they intend to work and maintain an adequate connection with their profession.
The specific requirements for recency depend on the profession, the level of experience of the practitioner and, if applicable, the length of absence from the practice.
Revised recency of practice registration standards for the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Island Health Practice, Chinese medicine and occupational therapy boards took effect on 1 December 2019. See further details in the related news item.
These new standards were developed after a review of the existing standards, which included public consultation. The consultation report provides an overview of the consultation process, rationale for any changes and sets out the proposed way forward, including areas where further work is planned.
